These solar panels were absolutely covered in lichen. Lichen grows on solar panels where there is a nitrogen-rich atmosphere on the surface of the solar panels. In this instance it was due to a large pigeon population nesting under the solar panels. Their build-up of their droppings was creating the nitrogen-rich atmosphere. Why Is The Lichen So Bad On The Solar Panels?
The solar panels get very dirty, very quickly becuase of a couple of factors. Firslt,y there is a large pigeon population that rest on the roof of this property and create a real mess. Lichen growth like this can damage the solar array in two ways. Firstly, the instant reduction in output everyday. With very little light hitting the solar cells, very little power will be produced. Secondly, The long terms effects of shading from the lichen can cause cells to fail permanently. Then you have a permanently damaged solar panel which will never again produce as much electricity as it should.

How Were The Solar Panels Cleaned So Well?
We first had to gain access to the solar panels with a cherry picker. Then we used an approved lichen removal chemical. Unlike the vast majority of lichen removal chemicals, ours has been approved for use by many solar panel manufacturers. The chemical was applied via a hand sprayer and left to soak in. The lichen was then carefully removed, without causing damage to the glass. We were able to bring these Wembley solar panels to an as new condition, much to the delight of the home owner. What a transformation!
